My artistic practice is always a balancing act between emotional clarity and mastery of media. I’ve always enjoyed adding new mediums to my arsenal and understanding how each method of making can connote a different emotion or idea. The content of my work always stems from me, however. It’s hard for it not to. My content could be something I think looks cool, a character I enjoy because the content it originates from brings me closer to someone special, or an attempt to convey an emotional depth I feel. The only outlier is craft. I’ve enjoyed crocheting since my grandmother taught me; years ago I learned to knit so I could make a hat for my boyfriend. One of my favorite art teaching teacher’s showed me how to felt (which is good clean stabby fun). In the summer of 2019 I took a course on book making that would change my life forever. I’ve made some 40 or so books since that class and counting. These crafts are more meditative in nature but allow me to gift others with art without feeling guilty. My drawings and paintings feel like a part of my soul, so giving them away and never seeing them again feels wrong. I know I should learn to let go of my art, and trust I am trying.

With all that said, my art flows between mediums and more often than not attempts to blend them together. My interest in different media has been, in part, a passion to know more, so that when I become an art teacher, I’ll be able to give some level of firsthand knowledge to my students. I don’t want to enter a classroom and say “I’ve only ever worked with oils and charcoal” when I can’t bring either into the classroom. I strive to be able to say, “let’s work with crayons and watercolor” and know how to mix these media for cool effects that keep my students engaged. I don’t want to just tell my students to work in 2D when some may feel more comfortable in 3D; so, I need to know different 3D options and strategies so I can guide my students well.

All in all, I love my art. It’s cathartic, it’s fun, and it’s something I can share (one way or another). I finished my Bachelor's in 2020 (quite the year to finish),  and am on my way to completing my Master's. The final project for my undergraduate is in the link below under Margaret Fish.
